The Chemical Library data source in App Builder now includes Synonym 2, Synonym 3, and Synonym 4 fields, enabling users to search and identify chemicals using all available synonym names.
Understanding the previous system limitations
Previously, the Search Chemical App in App Builder only exposed Synonym 1 from the Chemical Library data source. Chemicals integrated from content providers can carry up to four synonym names, but Synonyms 2, 3, and 4 were not available for search or display within App Builder.
Users searching for a chemical using an alternate name (Synonym 2, 3, or 4) received no results, reducing the effectiveness of chemical identification workflows.
Accessing the new synonym fields
The Chemical Library data source now includes Synonym 2, Synonym 3, and Synonym 4 fields, in addition to the existing Synonym 1. This enhancement enables users to search and identify chemicals using all available synonym names, improving accuracy and completeness in chemical lookup within App Builder CoSHH and custom assessment forms.
To add the new synonym fields to your App:
- Open your Search Chemical App configuration.
- Add any or all of the new synonym fields (Synonym 2, Synonym 3, Synonym 4) to your App form or search criteria.
- Save your configuration.
When a chemical has Synonym 2, 3, or 4 data, those values display correctly in the App and match the Chemical Library record.
Searching using multiple synonyms
Users can now search using a value matching any of the four synonyms. Results are returned consistently regardless of which synonym is used to search.
If a chemical does not have Synonyms 2, 3, or 4 populated, those fields display as blank. No errors occur and the App continues to function normally.
Note: The existing Synonym field has been renamed to Synonym 1 to maintain naming consistency across all four synonym fields. All existing Synonym 1 functionality is unchanged.
Updating existing Apps
Important: Only the Search Chemical App template is updated. Any existing App previously created from the Search Chemical template will not be updated automatically.
To access the new synonym fields in an existing App:
- Delete your existing App that was created from the Search Chemical template.
- Recreate the App using the updated Search Chemical template.
- Configure the new synonym fields as required.
